These determine how much damage you do and how much you can take.

It's far better to upgrade all your weapons, armor and components. Upgrading your ship won't get you much unless you have enough money to buy the equipment needed to fully utilize it. One last thing: you can find see your current rank with the guilds by pulling up the 'Command' overlay (Ctrl key by default). This ensures the missions you pickup will always increase the rep with that guild AND you'll find better missions (more $ and rep) than are available at other non-guild stations. One last suggestions here: If you are trying to level up with one of the guilds, it's always best to go back to the guild's stations to pick up additional missions. Another advantage of focusing on the Merchant's guild at this early stage is that you won't have to worry about going negative with them when later missions (especially those for the Mercenaries) have you doing missions that reduce your rep. As long as don't progress to the next system, missions won't require you to jump between systems (they'll all be in the starting system) which makes grinding rep much easier. The Merchant's Guild is the only guild that's always available in the starting system. This is the best cargo hold you can get in the game and will make inventory management far less of an issue throughout the rest of the game. One of my top recommendation early on is to remain in the starting system until you've reached level 5 with the Merchant's Guild, allowing you to purchase the 'Large Extender' cargo hold.
